The pelagic zone refers to the open ocean water column, extending from the surface to the deepest parts of the ocean, excluding the sea floor. It is the largest marine ecological zone, characterized by its vertical layering based on depth, light penetration, and pressure. Organisms living in this zone, such as plankton, jellyfish, fish, squid, and whales, are adapted to life suspended in the water column, away from the ocean bottom. The pelagic zone plays a crucial role in global biogeochemical cycles, oceanic food webs, and climate regulation
